If you have been told you need a blood test in North Wales, the booking process is not always obvious — and if you have searched for an appointment recently, you will know availability can be frustrating. This guide explains both routes honestly: how the NHS system works across the region, and what the private option looks like when you need results quickly.
The NHS route: how blood test booking works in North Wales
NHS blood tests across North Wales are run by the local health board. Two things are worth knowing before you try to book:
1. You need a request first. A blood test has to be requested by a clinician — usually your GP practice or a hospital team. You cannot simply book a slot and choose your own tests on the NHS.
2. Booking is done online. Once you have a request, appointments at hospital phlebotomy units and community hospitals across the region are booked through the health board’s online booking system — your GP practice can point you to the current link. Venues include the main hospitals (Wrexham Maelor, Glan Clwyd, Ysbyty Gwynedd) and community sites around the region.
The NHS route is free, and for routine monitoring it is usually the right choice. The honest downsides: appointment availability varies a lot by site, popular venues book up quickly, and you may need to travel further or wait longer than suits you — particularly if your test is time-sensitive, or you simply want answers sooner.
The private route: same-week blood tests, no referral needed

Blood tests by town
Wrexham. NHS bloods run through the Wrexham Maelor and community sites, and slots are in high demand. Our St Asaph clinic is about 40 minutes along the A55/A483 — many Wrexham patients combine a private blood test with a doctor appointment on the same visit.
Rhyl & Prestatyn. The Royal Alexandra in Rhyl handles local NHS phlebotomy. We are roughly ten minutes from Rhyl, straight down the A525 — usually the quickest private option on the coast.
Colwyn Bay & Llandudno. Colwyn Bay Community Hospital and Llandudno Hospital both run NHS clinics. St Asaph is 15–25 minutes east on the A55.
Mold, Flint & Flintshire. Flintshire patients often report the longest trek for NHS slots. We are about 25–30 minutes from Mold, with free parking at the clinic.
Denbigh & St Asaph. Denbigh Infirmary offers NHS clinics; our clinic is on St Asaph Business Park itself, about 15 minutes from Denbigh.
Which route should you choose?
If your GP has requested routine bloods and the timing does not matter much, use the NHS route — it is free and the system, while busy, works. Choose private testing when you want answers this week, when you want tests the NHS will not routinely run, when you cannot get to the venues offered, or when you want a doctor to review and act on the results in one place.
