Low Testosterone: How We Assess It
Tiredness, low mood, less drive or a lower sex drive are easy to put down to work, stress or age, but they can be signs of low testosterone. Low testosterone is also one of the most common findings in our health checks: when we audited our health checks, it was one of the three main risk factors we found that can be improved.
1. A doctor's appointment. A full history of your symptoms, sleep, alcohol, medicines and supplements, and an examination including blood pressure and weight.
2. Morning blood tests. Testosterone is highest in the early morning and can fall considerably later in the day, so we test in the morning, ideally before 11am. We measure total testosterone and SHBG (the protein that carries it), alongside the results that help explain it, such as thyroid function, blood sugar, liver health and cholesterol.
3. A repeat test before any conclusion. A single low result is always repeated on another morning.
4. Finding the cause. Low testosterone is often a sign of something else: carrying extra weight, type 2 diabetes or prediabetes, poor sleep including sleep apnoea, heavy drinking, recent illness or prolonged stress, or some long-term medicines. Treating the cause can raise testosterone on its own. Less commonly, the problem lies in the testes or pituitary gland and needs further tests.
5. A clear plan. Your doctor explains every result and agrees a plan with you, including whether treatment is appropriate.
Want the wider picture at the same time? Our Core Health Check includes testosterone and SHBG among around 50 blood markers.

Could Low Testosterone Be Affecting You?
The ADAM questionnaire (Androgen Deficiency in Ageing Males) is a validated screening tool used by clinicians to identify men who may have low testosterone. Answer the 10 questions below to see whether a testosterone assessment might be worthwhile.
Important: This screening tool is not a diagnostic test. Only a GP can assess and diagnose testosterone deficiency through clinical evaluation and blood tests.

Questions?
Can you test and treat low testosterone?
Yes, but we start with an assessment rather than a prescription. Low testosterone must be confirmed on repeat morning blood tests, and we look for the cause first, because many men improve when the underlying cause is treated. Where testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) is clinically appropriate, your doctor will talk you through the options and can start treatment with regular monitoring.
Do you help with erectile dysfunction?
Yes. ED is a common and highly treatable condition. We provide thorough assessment including cardiovascular and hormonal factors, and offer evidence-based treatment options including medication where appropriate.
What is a PSA test?
A PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) blood test is used to help assess prostate health and screen for prostate-related conditions. We offer PSA testing as part of our men's health assessments.
Can I book a general men's health MOT?
Yes. Our Core Health Check (up to an hour with a doctor and around 50 blood markers, including testosterone) or our most comprehensive Advanced Health Check (around 70 markers, PSA where appropriate, ECG and lung function) give you a detailed picture of where your health stands.
Is the appointment confidential?
Completely. All consultations are strictly confidential and conducted in a private, professional setting.
How do I book?
You can book directly online or call us on 0330 043 5003. No referral is needed.
