If you've been waiting a long time to see a psychiatrist, or you'd like a specialist opinion without going through a referral, you can arrange a private consultation with our consultant psychiatrist directly. Appointments are usually available within a couple of weeks, including evenings and weekends, either by video or in person at our clinic in St Asaph.
After the consultation you'll receive a written summary of the psychiatrist's assessment and recommendations, and with your consent we can share it with your NHS GP.

Dr Perera is a consultant psychiatrist with over two decades of experience. He has broad expertise in the assessment and treatment of a wide range of psychiatric conditions, including depression, anxiety, memory disorders, ADHD and psychotic illnesses, with a particular interest in the mental health of older adults. His approach is thoughtful and evidence-based, tailored to each person rather than a protocol.
Dr Perera works alongside the rest of the zenvité team, so if your care needs blood tests, physical health checks or ongoing prescribing support from a doctor, that can be arranged here rather than sending you elsewhere. Where talking therapy would help, our counsellor works in the same clinic.
What happens at your appointment
Before
When you book, we'll send a short questionnaire so the psychiatrist has your history, current medication and what you'd like to get out of the appointment. If you have previous letters or reports, you can send them in advance.
The Consultation
Your initial appointment is 60 minutes, by video or in person in a quiet, private consulting room at our St Asaph clinic. It's a conversation, not a test: what's been happening, your history, what's been tried and what matters most to you. There's time to ask questions.
Afterwards
You'll receive a written summary of the assessment and the psychiatrist's recommendations. If medication is recommended, a private prescription can be issued. With your consent, we'll write to your NHS GP so your records are complete and any ongoing prescribing can be discussed.
Review appointments are 30 minutes and are usually shorter and more focused. How many you need depends on the plan — some people need one, some none.

A private psychiatrist for North Wales, Cheshire and beyond
Our clinic is in St Asaph, just off the A55 — roughly 25 minutes from Rhyl and Prestatyn, 30 minutes from Colwyn Bay and Llandudno, 35 minutes from Mold and Holywell, 40 minutes from Wrexham and Chester, and under an hour from Bangor. Video appointments work well for most psychiatry consultations and mean you can be seen from anywhere in Wales or the rest of the UK.

Do I need a referral to see a private psychiatrist?
No. You can contact us directly. If you have letters from your GP or previous specialists, they're helpful but not required.
Can a private psychiatrist prescribe medication?
Yes. If medication is recommended, a private prescription can be issued. Some medicines need monitoring, and the psychiatrist will explain what that involves before starting anything.
Will my NHS GP take over prescribing?
Sometimes, but not always, and it's your GP's decision. Many GPs are happy to continue a treatment once a specialist has started it and it's stable, but they're not obliged to, and some medicines need to stay with a specialist. We'll write a clear letter with the reasoning, which makes that conversation easier. Until then, prescribing can continue privately.
How quickly can I be seen?
We aim to offer an appointment within a couple of weeks, with evening and weekend times available. Contact the team and we'll tell you what's free.
Is it video or in person?
Either. Video works well for most psychiatry consultations. In-person appointments are in a quiet, private consulting room at our clinic in St Asaph.
Do you see children and young people?
No — our psychiatry service is for adults aged 18 and over.
Is this the same as an ADHD assessment?

A psychiatry consultation is broader and is the right choice when the picture is unclear or there's more than one thing going on.
What's the difference between a psychiatrist and a counsellor?
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who can assess, diagnose and prescribe. A counsellor or psychotherapist works with you through talking therapy. Many people benefit from both, and at zenvité they work in the same clinic — see our mental health and counselling page.
What if I'm in crisis?
This service is for planned consultations and can't provide emergency care. If you're in immediate danger or feel you can't keep yourself safe, call 999, go to your nearest emergency department, or contact your GP's out-of-hours service. The Samaritans are available any time on 116 123.
Is what I say confidential?
Yes. Your notes are held in our secure clinical system. We only share information with your GP or others with your consent, except in the rare situations where there's a serious risk to you or someone else, which the psychiatrist would discuss with you.
